Fellowship Opportunity: CNN Wire
The CNN Wire is on CNN’s editorial front line, editing and vetting the work of correspondents and producers worldwide and doing original reporting for use across CNN’s networks and Web pages. The resulting report is a summary of the must-read domestic and world headlines, and reflects the original and insightful reporting that makes CNN the world’s news leader. CNN Wire editors work in real time to ensure that stories are accurate, balanced, timely and compellingly told. As befits a 24-hour global news organization, the stories are moved around the clock as soon as they become available and are frequently updated to reflect new developments, drawing from the strength of CNN’s 19 newsgathering centers across the United States and its 33 international bureaus.

A Masters Fellow with the CNN Wire would get the opportunity to experience real hands-on, day-to-day experience as an Assistant News Editor, under the guidance & supervision of a NewsDesk Editor. In that role, the fellow would be assisting the desk, helping with news edits, phone reporting, and even writing some stories. The student would learn the process that goes into making sound, day-to-day editorial decisions, experience the thrill and the discipline of working in a deadline-driven environment, learning how to make quick decisions and execute them properly.

Successful applicants will be qualified to do primary reporting by phone, process bureau and field reports and write or copy edit news copy on very tight deadlines suitable for broadcast and online distribution. Primary focus is breaking news, updating and fleshing out the key stories of the day. Other duties include monitoring and reporting on live news events, working with news sources and reporters over the phone, editing, rewriting or condensing, and vetting bureau and reporter entries, and checking out news tips from affiliate desk editors and others. Accuracy is paramount; writing speed, versatility and flexibility also are important attributes.
