2009 SUMMER PROGRAMS FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTSFREE!! GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY Science & Engineering Apprenticeship program (summer) - This program places academically talented H.S. students (at least 16 yrs old, sophomores/ juniors) with interest in science & math in Dept. of Defense laboratories for an 8-wk period over the summer. This is an invaluable experience in the world of scientific research, with hands-on exposure to scientific & engineering practices not available in the HS environment. FREE!! The National Center for Health Marketing's Global Health Odyssey Museum is pleased to offer the 2009 CDC Disease Detective Camp (DDC). DDC is an academic day camp for students who will be high school juniors and seniors during the 2009-2010 school year. Campers will take on the roles of disease detectives and learn how CDC safeguards the nation's health. The camp will be offered twice from June 22-26 and July 13-17. FREE!! The American Legion sponsors a week-long summer leadership program called Boys State . This year's program will be held at McDaniel College in Westminster , Maryland from June 21-27. If you are a junior interested in a leadership opportunity see your guidance counselor right away for more information.

The Leadership Center at Morehouse College presents the 2009 Coca-Cola Pre-College Leadership Program. There are 2 programs, one for male students completing their sophomore or junior year, and the other for male students completing their senior year. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale). The curriculum focuses on personal and interpersonal leadership skills. The program runs from June 20 to June 26. The cost is $400.00. NASA sponsors the National Space Club Scholars Program, a 6 week summer internship at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. It is open to students who will be 16 years old and have completed the 10th grade by June 2009, have demonstrated high academic success, and have an interest in space science or engineering as a career. Description of the Organization: Children’s PressLine is a non-profit media & youth leadership organization that works with kids, ages 8 to 18. We give kids the opportunity to represent themselves in the media. Our mission is to give kids a voice & the power to use it. Our work is read in The New York Daily News, the NY Amsterdam News and distributed to 400 newspapers nationwide through the Scripps Howard News Service.
Project Description: During the summer of 2009, CPL will be working in the Daily News building and producing three pages a week for the paper’s borough supplements – Brooklyn News, Bronx Boro News and Queens News. We are looking for interns to coordinate the areas described below.

Editorial Coordinators are responsible for managing teams of youth journalists as they research, brief and interview their peers throughout the city for youth community news bureau located inside the New York Daily News. Interns will work as bureau chiefs assigned to meeting weekly deadlines with their team of youth journalists. By outreaching to youth-serving organizations, the intern will work with teen editors to coordinate interviews with kids and public policy officials. Some transcribing and editing may be involved. Interns will also be responsible for working directly with teen editors to engage them in the story process. Ideal candidate will have had a leadership position at a college newspaper or have worked for a professional mainstream publication. Interns need to be able to work independently, understand the value of deadlines & have excellent research & phone skills. Stipend available. Mon-Thur., 30 hours/wk.
Editorial Assistants will serve as support staff for Editorial Coordinators and other project staff. Interns must be motivated and be interested in learning more about journalism. This is an entry level position. Interns need to be able to work independently, understand the value of deadlines & have excellent research & phone skills. Previous reporting experience preferred. 16 hours/week.
Photography Coordinator will develop and implement a photography training program for youth photojournalists. Intern will be responsible for making sure youth photographers meet several weekly deadlines with professional quality news photography. Intern will coordinate assignment with Editorial Coordinators and Editorial Direction. Traveling through Brooklyn, Bronx and Queens is necessary. Must have a flexible schedule. Interns will also be responsible for uploading photos to the Daily News’ photo system and writing cut-lines. Strong candidates include Photo Directors at college newspapers. Stipend possibly available.

Position: Program Assistant(Summer Intern)

Responsibilities: An NABJ Program Assistant (P.A.) plays a key role in the implementation of programs at the National Association of Black Journalists in Adelphi, Maryland.

In the office, they assist in the coordination and production of convention workshops, plenary sessions and awards programs at the national convention - contacting print, online and broadcast journalism organizations for production materials necessary for convention producers.

The candidate is also involved within the coordination of the NABJ National Media Awards, including its organization, judging and production. Onsite at the national convention and career fair, the candidate plays a crucial role with producers in awards distribution, session logistics and on-going development of the convention.

Program Assistants also participate in additional duties as assigned, including necessary administrative and member service functions of the convention.

Program Assistants will attend the 2009 Annual Convention and Career fair in Tampa, FL, August 5 – 9, 2009.

Candidate must be a current or recent undergraduate at an accredited college/university.

Candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills, intermediate Microsoft Office experience, can work in a high-impact environment, and possess a professional office demeanor.

Program Assistants will work within the following departments of NABJ:

Programs
The Programs department manages all NABJ programming including the annual conventions, Media Institutes, awards, scholarships and fellowships. Program Assistants will be involved in the coordination of convention programs such as the Hall of Fame and Salute to Excellence Awards banquets. This position requires a high level of detail and heavy research gathering skills.

Communications
The Communications department manages all official communication and marketing efforts of the organization. Program Assistants will be involved in the production of the NABJ Journal, member eblasts, and conventional marketing materials.

Membership
The Membership department serves as the primary customer support to the membership. Program Assistants will be involved in distribution of new member packets, database management, and assist with general membership issues.

Glamour Magazine Editorial Internship

GLAMOUR MAGAZINE EDITORIAL INTERNSHIP: Glamour magazine’s features department seeks college juniors, seniors and graduate students who can receive course credit for a 10-week internship beginning June 15. Interns should have experience writing and reporting for student, local or other publications and have a true passion and interest in magazine journalism as a career. Duties will include administrative tasks as well as reporting, interviewing, research, idea generation and the possibility of writing for glamour.com. (This internship is in features, not beauty or fashion, so applicants should have interests in a wide range of topics such as health, women’s issues, news, politics, sex, relationships and other areas.) The position is unpaid, but does have a stipend of $12 a day. The Independent Media Internship Program

The Media Consortium's Independent Media Internship program is for undergrad and graduate students committed to smart, independent journalism. Interns will be matched with a Media Consortium member organization (magazine, online news site, television network, radio network/program) for three months in Summer or Fall of 2009. We are placing interns in Washington DC, New York and San Francisco. Interns are responsible for their own lodgings and can mark location preference in the application.

Interns will receive a stipend of $2,000 for twelve 32-hour work weeks. Over this three month period, interns will complete one or more major editorial projects, have weekly duties (including fact-checking, research, writing and media production) and meet with top editors and reporters for mentoring sessions. Four individuals will be placed in our Summer program (May 18-August 14) and another four will be placed in our Fall program (September 14-December 11). We are accepting applications for both semesters.
