Hello all,

My name is Lawrence Ross and I'm about to launch a new Gawker like blog that covers education (goes live in about a month). I'm looking for writers who have a casual voice, understand both witty and snark, and can deliver short pieces (150-200 words) in a timely fashion. We're an aggregator, so we're updating the blog with education stories every fifteen minutes, so I need writers who can read stories, understand them, then translate them to our readers...with attitude. We're not interested in what you learned in journalism school (well sorta). We want writers who understand that we're covering education with multiple voices: sometimes gossipy, mostly irreverently, always smart...and 1/1000th of the time...serious.

And the best thing...there's no pay! Wait, I can feel the frowns on your face when you read that. Well, that's the reality. There's no pay, no promise of pay, nor will we commit to ever paying anyone. That said, we're going to do a number of things that you might not get elsewhere. One, where going to try to promote our best writers as much as possible. Two, we're going to get heavy hitter interview subjects for our best writers to interview. And along with pushing along stories like Gawker/Deadspin/

HuffingtonPost, we're also looking to break stories too. So if you're game, contact me. I'll ask for a writing sample based on a story I send you. Thanks!

How to snag an NABJ internship/scholarship

Dear Students:

As you know, the deadlines for NABJ's internship and scholarship programs is Friday, March 4. Many of you may be in the process of fine-tuning your applications, and I'd like to pass along some advice to ensure that you put your best foot forward to the judges in both programs.

1. Work samples - For print, please make sure you attach the number of samples requested in the application. And make sure you have either a link to a website where the story was printed or you have a clear PDF of the story. It's not enough to send an MS Word file of your stories. For broadcast, use You Tube for your reel. Make sure the reel isn't too long, and is a showcase of your best work. For radio, use a service like Cinch, SoundCloud or AudioBoo to showcase your work.

2. Cover letter - this is the document that sets up who you are and what you want to do. It's also the first impression judges get of you as a person. Use it to show off your talents and highlight your best work. A generic cover letter will NOT do.

3. Resume - Grammar errors and misspellings on a journalism resume are deadly. So look over your resume carefully and have at least one other person look at it too. And don't depend on spell check, because it misses key words. Give details on what you've done in an internship or related job. NABJ member Benet Wilson does FREE resume reviews. Take advantage of it. (benet@aviationqueen.com).

4. References - when submitting references, make sure you give the full name, title, company and contact information. Make sure that you have a mix of professors familiar with your school work and at least one professional reference if you can.

5. Completed application form - Please complete the application. The boxes are there for a reason. You hurt yourself when you omit things like equipment, software and location.

6. Official college transcript - Please, PLEASE get your official transcript. The application asks for this, so an unofficial one just won't work.

7. Website - if you're having the judges link to a personal website, make sure it is ready for viewing. Personal photos should be professional-looking head shots, not personal or casual ones. See resume tips. If you have a Twitter feed or Facebook link on your website, please make sure your feeds are all professional. Potential employers do check.

These programs from NABJ are great opportunities to help you move forward in your careers. So take full advantage of this opportunity and use these tips to put your best foot forward. Good luck to you all!

Association of Black Journalists is the opportunity to apply for the New York Times Student Journalism Institute, a collaboration of NABJ and The New York Times. This program gives you a chance to work one-on-one with
journalists from The New York Times and The Boston Globe covering one of the newsiest cities in America, New Orleans.

Since 2003, the Institute has been offering the very best
aspiring journalists a chance to polish their skills in all of the
specialties in today's newsrooms: writing, copy editing, photography, print and Web design, Web production, multimedia and video journalism. Students
can pick one field, or work across traditional boundaries.

The program pays all student expenses, including the cost of

Each year, the Foundation — in conjunction with New York Women in Communications — awards scholarships to graduating high school seniors and undergraduate and graduate students who intend to pursue or further a career in communications (in the picture: the 2010 scholarship winners and a video clip of their appearance on the Today Show.). Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic excellence, need, and a demonstrated commitment to the field of communications. New York Women in Communications and its Foundation are committed to inclusion and diversity. Note that awards are for use in the 2011-12 academic year.

ELIGIBILITY

U.S. citizens who are permanent residents of NY, NJ, CT, or PA

Past scholarship winners who are reapplying must be NYWICI members in good standing (i.e., dues for the current year paid in full, if applicable).
SCHOLARSHIPS

We award 15-20 scholarships, generally in the amounts of $2,500, $5,000, and $10,000. The distribution varies from year to year, but in 2010 we awarded $103,000 in scholarships to 19 students: six graduating high school seniors, nine undergraduates, and four graduate students. In addition to our general scholarships, the following named scholarships with specific qualifications currently are awarded through the New York Women in Communications Foundation. Most are funded by corporations or foundations that retain the right to impose qualifications, which may include, but are not limited to, a candidate’s declared major, area of study, or demonstrated skill; age or year of study; and personal background.

On the Road to Matrix Scholarship
Awarded to an outstanding NYWICI member who is a college junior or senior or graduate student and who has demonstrated her commitment to a career in communications and to the organization. Past scholarship winners are eligible. This scholarship is funded by members of the Matrix Hall of Fame.

Ruth Whitney Scholarship from Glamour magazine
Awarded to a college student who has had some experience in writing, reporting, or design and who has a demonstrated interest in magazine journalism or publishing. Includes an opportunity to visit the magazine and spend a week with the editorial team.

Judy Corman Memorial Scholarship and internship from Scholastic
Awarded to a student interested in public relations who is able to fulfill a paid internship at the company’s New York City headquarters during summer 2011.

Interpublic Group (IPG) Scholarship and internship
Awarded to an ethnically diverse student who is currently a college junior and who has demonstrated an interest in a career in advertising or public relations. Candidates must be able to fulfill a paid internship in New York City during summer 2010. IPG is the holding company for a large number of firms focused on communications. Some of the most well known advertising and PR brands include McCann Erickson, Draftfcb, Deutsch, Gotham, Weber Shandwick, and GolinHarris.

Hearst Scholarship
Awarded to a college sophomore, junior, or senior with a demonstrated commitment to a career in magazines (editorial or ad sales) or digital media. Opportunity exists for an internship at the company’s New York City headquarters during summer 2011.

Daniel Ladner Scholarships
Awarded to a college junior or senior or a graduate student who has demonstrated a strong interest in pursuing a career in financial communications (whether in marketing, advertising, investor relations, PR, corporate communications, or the media/journalism), or political communications (whether in political journalism, advertising, analysis, or consulting; public, government, or international affairs; diplomacy; speechwriting; or advocacy) – two scholarships awarded.

Carlozzi Family Scholarship
Awarded to an undergraduate student who is an accomplished writer.

New York Women in Communications Alumna Award of Excellence
Awarded to a previous scholarship winner who is dedicated to strengthening NYWICI and has shown outstanding growth as a student since she first became a recipient. This scholarship is supported by the fund-raising efforts of previous scholarship winners.

The Esperanza Scholarship funded by Macy's and Bloomingdale's
Awarded to a student of Hispanic heritage pursuing the dream of a career in communications.

SELECTION PROCESS

Recipients are chosen by the New York Women in Communications Foundation Scholarship Committee on the basis of academic achievement, demonstrated leadership, participation in school and community-service activities, honors and other awards or recognition, work experience, and statement of goals and aspirations. Need and unusual personal and/or family circumstances are also considered. Candidates who make the first cut will be interviewed by telephone. Those who make it to the finals will be required to attend an in-person interview in New York City on Friday, March 11, or Monday, March 14 (no exceptions and no telephone interviews). Finalists and nonfinalists will be notified by email on March 3 or 4; finalists will then be contacted by telephone between March 3 and 8 to schedule their interviews. After the final interviews, names of scholarship recipients will be posted to the Foundation website by Friday, March 18.

Recipients are required to attend and will be acknowledged on stage at the New York Women in Communications Matrix Awards Luncheon on Monday, April 11, 2011, in New York City. They are expected to dress and behave in a way that is exemplary for young professionals.
OBLIGATIONS OF RECIPIENTS

CONFIRMATION OF ACCEPTANCE
Each recipient must provide written confirmation of acceptance into an undergraduate or graduate program at an accredited college or university no later than May 16, 2011. Scholarship monies will be sent directly to educational institutions in June.

ACTIVE PARTICIPATION IN NEW YORK WOMEN IN COMMUNICATIONS
Scholarship recipients automatically receive a complimentary one-year membership in New York Women in Communications – which we hope they will renew on their own in subsequent years – and are viewed as the organization’s ambassadors. As such, they will be invited to events throughout the course of the year and are expected to attend as many as possible – for those attending schools within an easy commute of New York City – and to be active participants in the organization (either directly or remotely via the Internet or telephone). Participation can take many forms, including but not limited to committee membership, writing articles for various publications, serving as event volunteers, bringing nonmember friends to events, and spreading the word about our events and recruiting new members on campus.

INTERNSHIPS
Recipients of sponsored scholarships that come with internships or other onsite opportunities are expected to fulfill those as part of the terms of acceptance. That includes complying with all requirements and demonstrating professionalism in dress and behavior.

CHANGE OF STATUS
Recipients are required to notify New York Women in Communications of any changes of school or home address and other contact information, enrollment status, or other relevant information.

COURSE OF STUDY
While the course of study is left to the student, the recipient must major in a communications-related field and take sufficient credits each semester to qualify as a full-time undergraduate student or a full or part-time graduate student during the academic year for which the scholarship is awarded.

CONDITIONS FOR TRANSFER
Although scholarship recipients are expected to continue at the same college or university, the Scholarship Committee will consider transferring a scholarship to another institution. The student must notify the Scholarship Committee in advance of intent to transfer and to continue majoring in a communications field, provide evidence of good standing at the college/university attended, and submit evidence of acceptance at the new college/university.

INTERRUPTION OF STUDIES
A recipient may request that the award be held if the student’s studies are interrupted by prolonged illness, an accident, or other extenuating circumstances (to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis). Any such interruption must be documented in writing and reported promptly to the Scholarship Committee for approval. It is the student's responsibility to notify the Scholarship Committee of intent to resume full-time study so that arrangements can be made for reinstatement of the award. If the interruption is medical, it must be documented in writing by a physician.

SCHOLARSHIP RENEWAL
Renewal is not automatic. Past recipients are eligible to reapply but cannot receive the same named scholarship more than once and must complete the appropriate supplemental application form as part of the application package.

For more than two decades, the National Association of Black Journalists has supported its student members and the future of journalism by offering students an opportunity to cover our annual convention and host city.

Program Description

NABJ offers an expenses-paid fellowship to outstanding students pursuing a career in journalism. For one week, students work on varied news assignments. Students will produce stories for the NABJ Monitor, our convention newspaper, NABJ TV, NABJ Radio and nabjconvention.org, our daily news web site. They will work alongside professional journalists and journalism educators from across the country. Students will gain hands-on experience using the latest tools to produce both breaking news as they cover NABJ's annual convention, and longer-form multimedia storytelling of broader issues.

Application Format

All applications must be received online. Resumes, cover letters, and clips should be uploaded as Word documents or PDFs. Complete links (where applicable) must be included. About the Program
The Society of Professional Journalists annually awards two Pulliam/Kilgore Freedom of Information Internships. One intern works in the offices of the Society’s First Amendment legal counsel in Washington, D.C. The other intern works at the Society’s National Headquarters in Indianapolis.

The interns research and write about freedom of information issues while assisting the Society’s Freedom of Information Committee and First Amendment legal counsel in preparing SPJ’s annual Freedom of Information Report.

Other responsibilities may include working on the SPJ Web site and assisting with SPJ programs and initiatives.

Interns receive a stipend of $400 per week and work during a mutually agreeable 10-week period during the summer.

Recipients are notified in February and should arrange to start their internships in late May or early June.

History/Administration

The Pulliam/Kilgore Freedom of Information Internships are awarded in memory of Bernard “Barney” Kilgore, an early and active member of the Society of Professional Journalists and former chairman of the board of Dow Jones & Co. Inc., the parent company of The Wall Street Journal; and Eugene C. Pulliam, a founder of Sigma Delta Chi and Central Newspapers Inc.

Internships are funded by the Society’s educational foundation, the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation.

The report addresses a Freedom of Information topic of interest to journalists and attorneys. The 5,000- to 6,000-word report is distributed at the Society’s National Convention.

Candidates for this position should possess a strong background in law or be able to demonstrate a solid interest in law and the ability to conduct the responsibilities required.

Other duties of the Washington, D.C., intern include:

The Tampa Bay Association of Black Journalists have extended our Griot Drum
Scholarship deadline to Oct. 10. We are giving away $5,000 in
scholarships, including one award for graduate students.

TBABJ to distribute $5,000 to minority journalism students, including a
first-ever graduate student scholarship award.

Because of growing demand, TBABJ will give away its first scholarship to a
graduate journalism student this year for $1,000. In addition, two
undergraduate students will each receive a $1,000 scholarship and one
undergraduate student will receive a $2,000 scholarship.

Our desire is to empower young journalists of color to join the ranks of
the working press. Please encourage all high school seniors, undergraduate

The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation is accepting applications for the 2011 Barbara Jordan Health Policy Scholars Program. This intensive summer program provides college students with an opportunity to work on policy issues in a congressional office and to engage in original health policy research and analysis under the guidance of Foundation research staff.

College seniors and recent college graduates who have a strong interest in addressing racial and ethnic health disparities or who are themselves a member of a population that is adversely affected by racial and ethnic health disparities are eligible to apply. Eligible candidates must be U.S. citizens who will be seniors or recent graduates of an accredited U.S. college or university by the fall of 2011. Individuals with a graduate degree and those individuals currently enrolled in a graduate degree program are not eligible to participate. The application deadline is 5 p.m. ET on Friday, December 3, 2010. Application materials and more information are available online.

Selected Scholars will work in congressional offices in Washington, D.C. for 10 weeks and will participate in weekly seminars and site visits designed to increase their understanding of the intersection between policy and the legislative process. The Scripps Howard Foundation's Semester in Washington program brings talented college journalists to Washington, D.C., for a fast-paced, practical internship in the nation's capital. Responsibilities: An NABJ Program Assistant (P.A.) plays a key role in the implementation of programs at the National Association of Black Journalists in Adelphi, Maryland.

In the office, they assist in the coordination and production of convention workshops, plenary sessions and awards programs at the national convention - contacting print, online and broadcast journalism organizations for production materials necessary for convention producers.

The candidate is also involved within the coordination of the NABJ National Media Awards, including its organization, judging and production. Program Assistants also participate in additional duties as assigned, including necessary administrative and member service functions of the convention.

The Media Consortium's Independent Media Internship program is for undergrad and graduate students committed to smart, independent journalism. Interns will be matched with a Media Consortium member organization (magazine, online news site, television network, radio network/program) for three months in Summer or Fall of 2009. President Obama Launches White House Internship Program

President Obama today launched the White House Internship Program for his administration and announced that applications are currently being accepted for the summer of 2009. Those selected to participate in the program will gain valuable job experience and an inside look at the life of White House staff while building leadership skills.

“This program will mentor and cultivate young leaders of today and tomorrow and I’m proud that they will have this opportunity to serve,” said President Obama. “I look forward to working with those that are selected to participate and I want to commend all who apply for their desire to help through public service to forge a brighter future for our country.”

In addition to normal office duties, interns will supplement their learning experience by attending a weekly lecture series hosted by senior White House staff, help at White House social events, and volunteer in community service projects.

The 2009 Summer Internship program runs from May 22 to August 14, and the submission deadline is March 22, 2009.

The American Society of Newspaper Editors is looking for juniors, seniors, and graduate journalism students to write and copyedit stories, shoot photographs, design web pages, and produce an online edition of The ASNE Reporter.

Eighteen students will work side by side with professional newspaper journalists as reporters, copy editors, photographers, page designers, and online producers on The ASNE Reporter.

Read by the nation's top editors, The ASNE Reporter showcases the work of talented students, most of whom are minorities. Asian, African American, Hispanic and Native American students are particularly encouraged to apply.

The ASNE Reporter will operate from Friday, April 24 through Wednesday April 29, 2009 at the Fairmont Hotel in Chicago, Ill. Students must be available for the entire period. Students are responsible for the classes they will miss for the week.

AAJA's J Camp is a free journalism training program for high school students. The camp will provide young people with the opportunity to develop their written, speaking, communication and leadership skills, while learning about diversity through a program that allows them to meet with top journalists in the country.

J Camp's goal is to develop the next generation of journalists. This six-day training camp brings together a multicultural group of high school students from across the nation to sharpen their journalism skills and work together in a unique learning environment. The curriculum consists of interactive workshops, hands-on training, and field trips.Applicants must demonstrate a keen interest in broadcasting, newspapers, magazines, photojournalism, or online media. As an Associate Producer Fellow, the student will research and identify video clips, update video rundowns, cut sound bites and vo's, produce in-house and natural sound packages, order and create graphics, and call up and roll video live to air via control-room video servers. The AP will also be called upon to oversee the production of fonts and graphics for the broadcast. It's a tough time in the world of journalism right now. There seem to be less internships and fewer opportunities to learn the skills that can lead to jobs.

One program that hasn't wavered in its commitment to aspiring journalists is the New York Times Student Journalism Institute. The two-week program will be held again this year from May 17 to 31 at Dillard University in New Orleans. Students selected for the program will work under the supervision of reporters and editors from The New York Times and The Boston Globe covering events in one of America's newsiest cities.

The Institute offers every opportunity that can be found in a newsroom today, from traditional print skills to all the multimedia aspects of the Web to video, podcasting and even Twitter.

And there's no cost to students. Every expense, including travel costs, is paid by the Institute, and students even receive a stipend.

But the deadline to apply is rapidly approaching. Applications must be postmarked by Friday, Feb. 27.

CongressNow, a sister publication of Roll Call newspaper and a member of The Economist Group, is an online news service that provides coverage of all legislative action in Congress, virtually in real time. Our interns are assigned to cover Congressional hearings, to ask lawmakers questions at news conferences and to write breaking news stories — often all in one day.

Interns are a vital part of our reporting staff, and their work will in most cases be published once if not twice a day. If you want to report and write for an exciting and fast-paced publication, and learn the nuts and bolts of professional journalism, few internships will offer more opportunities than CongressNow.

GalleryWatch is a real-time legislative tracking website that follows Congress’ every move, while CongressNow is a newly launched daily newsletter that covers legislation and policy on Capitol Hill. We are looking for journalism, political science, government, and English majors to spend a few months in our office working and learning. We are committed to providing our interns with practical work experience that will help them secure jobs in the future.

At GalleryWatch and CongressNow, interns are treated as regular employees and are given key responsibilities and lots of experience in the corridors of Capitol Hill. On a typical day, an intern will arrive at the office at 9 a.m. and meet with our committee editors to discuss the day’s assignments. The editors will prioritize hearings and send the intern to gather testimony from these hearings. There is usually a morning run and an afternoon run. In between trips to the Hill our interns help us with administrative tasks such as compiling contact sheets and short bill titles.

Several times a week, our interns are given the opportunity to observe a Congressional committee hearing and write an article. Congressional hearings cover a wide spectrum of topics, and we try to allow our interns to attend hearings that interest them. The articles are submitted to the committee editors within a day or two and are posted on the “Recent Committee News” section of the GalleryWatch website or in the CongressNow daily newsletter.

This is a wonderful opportunity for students to hone their writing skills, acquire clips for a portfolio, learn about our government and make contacts in the House and Senate.

Promote the future production home of GM’s first series electric vehicle, the Chevy Volt, and the home of some of its most popular cars, including the Chevy Malibu and Pontiac G6 in the local community and with local media. Work with manufacturing communications in promoting how both plants fit in to GM’s overall global manufacturing footprint.

Assist with day-to-day communication activities at the plants, including:

Benefits to the intern’s development

Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly has been identified as the plant that will build one of the most significant vehicles in the corporation’s history. The transition from products the plant builds now to the Volt will be a significant one and will require detailed communication on changes to the facility. Note: Much of the change will likely not happen until later in the year, but the transition should begin during the summer 2009 time period – and development of a communication plan for the change will be a priority.

Orion Assembly will be nearing its one-year anniversary running as a three-shift operation in the summer of 2009 and will be striving to build on its already strong quality performance.

The student will learn how to stretch the idea of multi-tasking to extremes between both facilities and their very different challenges/environments (i.e., plant in transition versus plant going at full or near full capacity and the challenges that creates in continuous improvement and motivation while avoiding burnout.

In addition, since both plants are located near our corporate headquarters, a portion of the assignment will include shadowing other IC professionals to experience the “corporate” side of internal communications. The assignment will also provide learning opportunities in the area of labor communications.

Assist with planning and support execution of divisional communications projects, including summer 2009 media events:

· Engage with media outreach to support Cadillac and Saab brand activities.
· Program support for Cadillac’s role in GM Collection events and heritage events like Pebble Beach and Saab’s role in 2009 Owner’s Convention.

Intern’s summer assignment will include communications activities in the following functions: Energy and the Environment Public Policy; conventional powertrains (engines and transmissions); biofuels and electrification of the vehicle (hybrids, Chevy Volt extended range electric vehicle and hydrogen fuel cells).

Managers who are responsible for the related assignments will mentor the intern. Additionally, the intern will receive ongoing mentoring and guidance from the director and other team members.
